EXPLORE Merida

November, 12th -14th, 2025

Merida offers a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Enjoy the charming colonial architecture, explore ancient Mayan ruins, and relax in the crystal-clear cenotes. Don't miss this opportunity to be part of a groundbreaking conference and experience the beauty of the Yucatán peninsula!

Merida, is the capital of the state of Yucatán, which are ranked the safest city and state in Mexico. Mérida has a vibrant yet tranquil colorful city center. Between the easily walkable streets, Merida Center is filled with local handcraft shops, restaurants, galleries and museums, enjoyed by both locals and tourists.

Merida’s international airport receives direct flights from Mexico City, as well as from Miami, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Orlando, Atlanta, and Toronto, Canada. With its attractive location, approximately 25 miles (40 km) from the Gulf of Mexico, surrounded by natural freshwater cenotes (sinkholes), ancient Mayan pyramids and UNESCO-listed historical sites, Merida and the Yucatán state can boast a myriad of options for any visitor.

The Yucatan’s rich culture heritage is an intertwined blend of the ancient Mayan civilization and the influence from the Spanish conquest in the 16th century. Spanish conquistadores founded the city of Mérida in 1542, which was built on the Mayan city of T’ho. Stones from the Mayan ruins were used when building The Cathedral of Mérida, the oldest cathedral in the Americas. Today’s Mérida is famous for its colorful tropical haciendas of colonial architecture, which significantly grew during the boom of the henequen industry in Yucatán during late 19th and early 20th century. Henequen fibers from the agave cactus plant were woven into rope and was an important export product that brought great wealth to the Yucatán.

This conference also wishes to acknowledge Yucatán’s history in Women’s rights, as it was here that the so called “First Feminist Conference” was held in 1916, which gave significant progress and political influence regarding legal equality between women and men as well as a wider access of higher education and career development for women in Mexico.
